PBIS Tier 1 Updates

At Carnation Elementary, we are continuing to strengthen our Tier 1 PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) systems to promote a positive, predictable, and supportive school environment for all students.

Here’s an overview of what that looks like in action:

🎟️ Tiger Tickets

Students earn Tiger Tickets when they demonstrate our school expectations and monthly character traits. Tickets can be saved and spent at our student store for small prizes and special experiences. This system reinforces positive behavior and encourages students to consistently model our Carnation Tiger values.

🎉 NEW: Tiger Tuesday Drawings

We have also launched Tiger Tuesday Drawings, a weekly celebration during lunch. Students may turn in their Tiger Tickets for a chance to have their name drawn. Winners receive small rewards and recognition in front of their peers, helping us celebrate positive behavior in a visible and exciting way.

🌟 Student of the Month (Restarted & Refreshed)

We are excited to restart our Student of the Month program with some updates. Each month, our recognition aligns with a specific character trait that we are intentionally teaching schoolwide.

At the end of each month, school staff nominate 1–2 students who have exemplified that trait in meaningful ways. These students receive a certificate, and their photo and a short description of their accomplishment are featured in a slideshow during lunch so the entire school community can celebrate them.

Throughout March, we will be celebrating students who demonstrated Kindness in February, while also looking for students who are modeling Citizenship to be recognized in April.

🏫 Working Toward a Whole-School Reward

In addition to individual recognitions, our students are working collectively toward a whole-school PBIS reward tied to positive behavior goals. As we get close to earning the celebration, students will have the opportunity to vote on the reward — giving them voice and ownership in celebrating their success together. Sometimes, as you can see in the photo below, student choice doesn't always go well for myself and Mr. Lesco...

Student Behavior & Discipline Update

As part of our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement, I want to share an update on student behavior trends and some related discipline data. Our goal is always to create a safe, supportive, and predictable learning environment for all students. The information below reflects where we are, what we’re noticing, and the steps we are taking to continue strengthening our school culture.

2024/2025 vs. 2025/2026

Above you will see a comparison of our average referrals per day, by month, from last school year alongside this year’s data so far. Looking at referrals in this way allows us to monitor trends over time rather than focusing on isolated incidents. This helps us identify patterns, adjust supports, and ensure we are responding consistently and proactively to student needs.

While numbers are only one part of the story, they give us valuable insight into how our systems are working and where we may need to strengthen instruction, supervision, or supports.

Another way we look at our discipline data is by reviewing where behaviors are occurring throughout the school day. The chart below shows behavior incidents by location. Not surprisingly, the majority of behaviors take place in the classroom and on the playground, as these are the two settings where students spend most of their time and where social interaction is highest. To a lesser extent, we see behaviors in the hallways and cafeteria.

Reviewing data by location helps us be proactive. When we see patterns, we can adjust supervision, reteach expectations, and provide additional supports in specific areas. Our goal is always to create consistent, predictable environments where students know what is expected and feel supported in meeting those expectations.
