Principal Update 3.20.26

Dear Carnation Families,
Dear Carnation Families,

We’ve officially wrapped up our first week of the 3rd trimester. It’s hard to believe we’re already in the final stretch of the school year! Report cards are now available in Synergy Parent VUE. Please refer to the ParentSquare message sent by our Office Manager, Myriah Heuberger, on Monday for directions on how to access.

Carnation Elementary was closed last Thursday due to a power outage, followed by a scheduled non-student day on Friday. Because other schools across Riverview School District remained open on Thursday, the missed day will not need to be made up. Currently, there are no changes to the school calendar.

Today, many of our students and staff wore blue and yellow or fun, mismatched socks in recognition of Down Syndrome Awareness Day. It was great to see our school community come together in support and celebration of inclusion. We are also looking forward to Autism Awareness and Acceptance Week next week.

It was a fun and energizing week to kick off the trimester, highlighted by our Talent Show Assembly this morning. It was wonderful to see so many of our students share their unique talents and interests with the school community. We’re also looking forward to the evening Talent Show performance tonight at 6:00 pm. We hope you’re able to join us!

In partnership,

Steve Lesco

Principal, Carnation Elementary

There will also be an opportunity for parents to provide input that will be used in the class placement process. Please return the completed form by Friday, April 3rd.

Carnation Elementary Presentation at the Board Meeting

Carnation Elementary was proud to present at the March 10 School Board meeting, highlighting our Student Specialist Helpers Program. Mr. Heimfeld, Ms. Eaton, and five student leaders had the opportunity to share how this program is making a positive impact across our school.

Our student leaders did an outstanding job sharing their experiences and the meaningful role they play in supporting others. The presentation truly captured the leadership, empathy, and sense of community that make this program so special.

Celebrating Inclusion at Carnation

Today we celebrated Down Syndrome Awareness Day, and we are looking forward to celebrating Autism Awareness and Acceptance Week next week.

Autism Awareness & Acceptance Week – March 23–29: Carnation Elementary will celebrate Autism Awareness & Acceptance Week, a time to learn, reflect, and celebrate the many ways our students think, learn, and shine.

Spring Testing – Save the Dates

As we look ahead to the spring months, we want to share our upcoming state testing dates so families can plan accordingly. Students in grades 3–5 will participate in the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in English Language Arts and Mathematics, and 5th grade students will also take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).

Please save the following dates:

  • WCAS (5th grade only): May 6

  • SBA ELA (Grades 3–5): May 12, 13, and 14

  • SBA Math (Grades 3–5): May 19 and 20

Sharing these dates early helps families plan ahead and ensures students are present and ready to do their best. Additional details will be shared as we get closer to testing.

Incoming Kindergarten Information Night – April 2nd

We are excited to welcome our incoming kindergarten parents to Kindergarten Information Night on Thursday, April 2 from 5:30–6:30 PM in the Carnation Elementary Library.

This is a great opportunity for you to meet the kindergarten teachers, as well as our principal and dean of students here at Carnation Elementary. During the meeting, you will learn about what a daily kindergarten schedule looks like and how our Smart Start and Soft Start family connections work.

If you know families in the community with children who will be starting kindergarten next year and who have not yet registered, please encourage them to attend and complete the registration process as soon as possible.

This event is intended for parents and guardians, as the focus will be on sharing information and answering questions. There will be future opportunities for incoming kindergarten students to visit the school, including Kindergarten Kickoff and playdates later in the spring and summer.
